China plans to invest 15 trillion yuan ($2.18 trillion) in transportation infrastructure over the five years through 2020, Transport Minister Li Xiaopeng said Monday.

The total represents a 20% increase over the previous five years. The budget earmarks 7.8 trillion yuan for a 320,000km extension of the country’s road network, including 30,000km of highways. Another 3.5 trillion yuan will be spent to add 30,000km of rail lines. The government also plans to invest 650 billion yuan in aviation, building more than 50 new airports.

China’s government spent 2.84 trillion yuan on transportation projects in 2016, the first year of the five-year plan, Li said.
